Configuring Internet News for Newsgroups

Setting Up Internet News

To run Internet News for the first time click the Start button and choose "Internet News" OR from Internet Explorer click the "Mail" button and choose "Read News". This will start the Internet News Configuration wizard. If it doesn't, then you have run Internet News before, or it was previously installed on your system, so click here.

  1. "Internet News needs to gather some information before you can start..." Click "Next"

    Fill in the blanks -
    Name:
    E-mail address:
Your first and last name or an alias.
    username@cxp.com

    Click "Next"

  2. "A News Server is the computer to which you connect to read news. Enter the name of your news server (e.g. "news-server")."

    Fill in the blank-
    News Server: news.cxp.com
Note: You do NOT log on to the news server, do NOT check "My news server requires me to log on".

    Click "Next."

  3. "When connecting to your news servers, you can connect in several different ways. Please specify the type of connection that you will use."

    Screen Shot:How do you Connect

Select "I use a modem to access my newsgroups"

In the blank where it says "Use the following Dial-Up Networking connection" choose CyberXpress (click the down-arrow button).

    Click next, then click "Finish".

You are now ready to read in newsgroups. If you are not already online, Internet News will prompt you to dial and connect to CyberXpress. Internet News will take a few minutes (depending on the speed of your modem) to download a list of all the newsgroups. This will only need to be done the first time you connect.

Once the list has been copied to your computer, you will get the Newsgroups window where you can browse through all the discussion groups available. Use the Subscribe button (or a double-click) to add Newsgroups which you are interested in. Subscribing to a Newsgroup doesn't mean you pay anything. It only means that of the thousand of groups available, you wish to keep track of (i.e. subscribe to) a select few.

Press F1 or use the Help menu to get further help on using Microsoft Internet News.
